Art in media Arts education

hey guys
I know it's bootcamp time and workterms but thats no reason to not to more. Iheard through our own little cfat rep that there's a panel discussion being held at nscc in the av room at 7pm Thursday,. janet is involved in it, as well as the artist in residence at cfat, its called the art in media arts education
Sounds like fun and brownie points go to whomever i see there.

Need a place for your stuff online? Ourmedia will host your stuff for free and let others find and enjoy it as well. You can upload video, audio, text and images and be part of a community. I've joined, but I haven't uploaded anything yet... but when I finish marking stuff I should have some time.

Final Cut Studio

Apple announced Final Cut Studio today. It's the latest version of their pro editing application. Final Cut Pro is now at version 5 (Final Cut Pro HD was version 4.5). Soundtrack is at version 5, Motion goes to version 2 and DVD Studio Pro goes to version 4. It looks pretty cool... now something new to learn!

The online journal 24LiesASecond has some great essays about films and filmmakers. Including ones about guilty pleasures (those films that you love, but don't tell people that you love them), and looking at films that may have been overlooked. Some great, thought-provoking essays.

*note from Andrew*
I need any of your films that you did this year. I will be collecting them anytime this week and all of work term . please get them to me.

thanks andrew

If you give him your movies soon I can get them for the screening, saves everyone a lot of time.

Thanks muchly

Personal Projects

Everyone did a great job on their projects, everything was so diverse I can't wait to put them in the screening. And I mean that quite litterally. So if you could get me a copy asap that would be great. Also a note for chris, as proven last screening my burning skills are not so good, could I get you to burn everything like the first screening?... when i gett it all in order of course.

Getting Real: Pick Two - Scope, Timeframe, or Budget

In any project you have to pick two - scope, timeframe, or budget and Jason Fried explains how to balance out the triangle that is time, money, talent or good, fast, or cheap or any of the other descriptions of the limitations that you face when doing any creative work. Some solid advice for any creative process that deals with people.

end of the year screening

Much like at the one at christmas there will be an end of the year screening at the school (I can't promise anything but I'll try my best). I realize you probably all think I'm nutz for starting this now but trust me it has to be this way or it may never get done in time. James and Martha have volunteered their help and the more the merrier. At the moment we're looking to start collecting finished edits of your projects and stills if you have them. Actually if you have digital stills or scan some you could post them on flikr.com or something and everyone could upload them. So if you see one of us in the maclab and u have a project on your computer it will only take a second to upload them and save us from tracking things down in may. stay tuned for more assignments.

summer film bunnies

Schools over in 2 months... what's everyone going to do? I hope you will all still make films (even without access to the cage it's possible). For those of you staying in Halifax that haven't explored your options I'd like to point out that AFCOOP and CFAT rent gear and have editing suites. Being Members and volunteering gets you even better rates. CFAT has free gear thursdays and AFCOOP have 1 day weekends, there are a lot of deals and places out there to be investigated. And its also a good way to get to know other people in the industry. I know you all know this but friendly reminders don't hurt.

Why Charlie Kaufman Doesn't Watch Movies Anymore

I want to watch a film in which it feels like there’s something at risk

Charlie Kaufman is interviewed in the Spring issue of Reverse Shot online where he reveals why he doesn't watch movies anymore to Michael Koresky and Matthew Plouffe. Some great thoughts and insight into one of the top screenwriters today.
